“I still remember how it was before.”
In 2018, the British Street Artist My Dog Sighs painted 540 of his signature eyes on the old surrounding wall of the Nuovo Regina Margherita Hospital in Trastevere, Rome.
This work of art was commissioned by the Forgotten Project, an organization that began in 2015 with the aim of reclaiming the value of Rome’s urban heritage, and enhancing Rome’s contemporary fabric through street art. This work of art is titled: “I still remember how it was before”
Each of My Dog Sigh’s painted eyes contains the Roman skyline, and silhouettes of people somehow connected to the old hospital. My Dog Sighs wanted the work of art to connect with its surrounding community by reflecting those who had been born, who had died, or who were working in the hospital.
For this mural, My Dog Sighs deviated from his normal use of bold colours; here, his colour palette is soft and delicate, resulting in a work of art that blends seamlessly with its surroundings and the old wall itself.
This mural is mesmerizing. Spend time looking at all the eyes of different sizes. Some are colossal and strikingly real, while others surface through a seemingly hazy fog.
